Posted in Students from different schools across Cornwall will have a chance to learn the importance of beach safety.
According to reports, the RNLI lifeguards will be spearheading the Hit the Surf program, which teaches kids aged eight to twelve on the values of beach safety.
RNLI Divisional Beach Safety Manager Dave Gorman said that they are optimistic that relaying the knowledge to the kids would potentially save a lot of lives. He added that the Hit the Surf sessions have been designed to be fun and encourages the participants to be active.
Gorman said that bodyboarding is a very popular activity among kids at the beach. It is with this reason that they will incorporate the teaching of proper bodyboarding to the kids so that they can avoid danger and untoward incidents.
The program will start this week at Hayle and Fistral beaches in Cornwall.
US water skiing governing body hires new Executive Director
The USA Water Ski, the national governing body for water skiing activities, announced this week that it has named the organization’s new Executive Director and it is none other than Bob Crowley.
According to the press release, Crowley has more than two decades worth of experience in executive management which makes him a qualified person for the job. He will start his post on June 1 where he will work part time for the meantime.
USA Water Ski President Jim Grew said that they are excited to bring Bob Crowley on board in their organization. He’s looking forward to the new Executive Director in bringing the organization to the next level of development.
Crowley recently served as Executive Director of US Speedskating. His stint with that organization started in 2006 and ended at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games held in Vancouver, Canada.

Winners of IFA Kayak Tour revealed
Louisiana-based Cameron Schurlknight topped the IFA Kayak Tour held at Sarasota, Florida on May 16 after he caught a redfish and speckled sea trout that totaled 53.5 inches in length. The competition was presented by Hobie Fishing.
The sea trout caught by Schurlknight reached 24.5-inch and the red fish was 29 inch in size.
The second place winner was Tony Lai who was 3.25 inch shorter in terms of total length. Lai won a Hobie Mirage Pro-Angler Kayak that costs $2,400.
The IFA Kayak and IFA Redfish Tours have been gaining group among enthusiasts in the United States. This is evidenced with the increased interest in terms of number of participants and the growing number of sponsors in these events.
IFA is an inshore fishing tournament series being held in several cities in the United States. Interested parties are invited to go to the hobie fishing website.
Crocodile kills woman during snorkeling adventure
A college student from New Jersey was killed during a snorkeling adventure in India’s Andaman Islands recently, about four years after her older sister died of rock-climbing accident in Washington.
Lauren Failla was attacked by a saltwater crocodile on April 28 during a snorkeling expedition with her boyfriend in India. She spent her holiday in this country after earning a master’s degree in art at London’s Sotheby’s Art Institute.
She went missing for two days. When found, her body bore marks of the attack of a giant saltwater crocodile.
According to reports, the attack was recorded by an underwater camera which the victim’s boyfriend used. The personnel who had to retrieve the victim’s body had a hard time getting past the crocodile. The crocodile was said to have been adamant in letting go of the body.
Families and friends of the victims gathered to remember Failla.
Louisiana residents face problems over stoppage of fishing due to oil spill
A major part of the Gulf of Mexico has been closed for fishing and shrimping causing residents in Louisiana worrying over the depletion of seafood in the state.
Officials from the Department of Health and Hospitals have decided to close a certain part of the gulf to fishermen for health reason. The oil spill that happened recently has affected marine life in the area.
Local restaurants have been serving a lot of seafood but the situation is expected to change now that the gulf has been closed for several days.
The oil spill has affected several businesses in the area such as seafood markets, restaurants and even other business establishments in the state.
The government is exerting extra efforts to avoid catastrophic events to happen in the following days and weeks due to the oil spill problem.
Family to attempt marathon water skiing for good cause
A family from Cincinnati, Ohio is planning to have marathon skiing adventure in a bid to raise money for a good cause.
The Miller family from Clermont County will water-ski from Ohio River to Cairo, Illinois this summer. The proceeds from the fund raising activity will go to Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
The Ohio River is about 980 miles long and runs from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cairo, Illinois. It is in Illinois where Ohio and Mississippi rivers meet.
The event, called “Marathon Ski for DAV,” is expected to run from six days and will take place somewhere in July.
The undertaking will be spearheaded by father Mark Miller. During the activity, Miller and his two teenage sons will take turns in water skiing behind the family’s speed boat.
The family wants to spread awareness on the efforts made by the veterans during the war.
Model Katie Price uses children to launch latest fashion line
Model and TV presenter Katie Price has ventured into the world of business by launching her latest fashion line composed of children’s equestrian clothing. In finding her models for this undertaking, she did not have to search for long because she has her adorable kids to do the deed.
Instead of spending a lot of money on professional models, Price asked her two children, four-year old Junior and two-year old Princess to model her latest fashion line which is both for boys and girls. The kids seemed happy to do this deed as evidenced by the great photos produced during the shoot.
The children are no longer new when it comes to the spotlight. They were featured recently in Price’s reality show in ITV titled “What Katie Did Next.”
The latest fashion collection is slated for release later this year.
Dubai resort opens scuba diving center
The popular Dubai resort Atlantis, The Palm has opened ‘The Atlantis Dive Centre’, a new world class scuba diving establishment located within the resort.
The five-star scuba diving center has been accredited by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and the establishment offers courses starting from basic “Discover Scuba Diving” to advanced ones such as “Open Water Diver” qualification. Children can also have fun via the junior diver courses offered by the center. They also offer scuba equipment and swimwear.
Prior to exploring the open ocean, tourists and guests can learn the basics of diving via one of the hotel’s specially-made saltwater pools.
Divers certified by PADI can then participate in a half-day trip in the Arab Gulf where they can visit man-made coral reefs and shipwrecks off the coasts of Dubai.
Advanced courses include deep diving, wreck diving, night diving and underwater photography.
The Atlantis Diver is a certified member of the Emirates Dive Association.
Successful Amsterdam Boat Show means good news in watersports industry
The watersports industry has suddenly gotten a big boost thanks to the successful HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show 2010 which took place from March 2 to 7, 2010 at the Netherlands’ capital city.
The increase in direct sales figures at the exhibition event showed that more people are still interested in acquiring new boats and accessories needed for watersports. There were are about 51,849 visitors who attended this yearly event, a three percent increased compared to 2009 figures.
The HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show is one of the biggest watersports exhibitions in Europe. The next HISWA event will take place from March 1 to 6, 2011.
Exhibitors were happy to see a huge number of attendees in this year’s event. Sloop constructor Plevier Watersports said this was a phenomenal event that signals the upward trend in the industry.
Jet Ski business part of scam – authorities
A number of jet skis were allegedly stolen and sold to prospective buyers by a certain businessman who’s currently being arraigned in Bantam Superior Court on Wednesday.
Thirty-two year old Brian Dunn of 350 Diamond Bridge Ave in Hawthorne, New Jersey was issued with a $10,000 bond on third and fourth-degree charges of larceny and second degree forgery for the above mentioned allegations.
Dunn is reportedly the owner of CT Powersports, a jet ski business located at New Milford. The authorities started checking out the suspect on January this year after they received a call from New Jersey state police that a certain stolen jet ski was part of a multi-state investigation that’s being done into business dealings by the suspect.
In one of the incidents specified in the warrant, Dunn allegedly refused to pay up on the jet skis that he got from a New Milford man. They agreed on a $3,500 selling price but until now Dunn has yet to settle the bill.
